Melissa, welcome to my humble corner in cyberspace. I’m so excited to read Bash’s story!
Q: What’s the strangest thing you’ve learned while researching a book?
Throughout the Out of Uniform series, Bash’s yacht, The Nemesis, plays a supporting role. In order to be accurate I researched not only the different parts of ships and their mechanics but superstitions regarding sailing and a ship’s name. For instance, it’s considered bad luck to rename a boat, and the characters in my books take that very seriously. However, I learned from a longtime sailboat captain, a new owner can get around that by performing a renaming ceremony involving anointing the boat with rum and offering a goodly amount to Poseidon.
Q: If you could live in one of your stories, which one would you choose and why?
I would live in LaGrange, North Carolina and be Mia and Hank’s neighbors (hero and heroine of book 2, Out of Sight). I want to see how many foster children they adopt and how Hank and his half-brothers get along. Also, Mia is really good at keeping in touch with the other members of the crew so I’d get to keep watch on the other families.
Q: Why military men? What is it that draws you to them?
I come from a military family so it was natural for me to see the men and women in uniform as heroes. I also wanted to honor the courage and commitment of those who have served our country. A common thread throughout all my books is, “ordinary heroes fighting extraordinary battles” so soldiers and sailors are a perfect fit. Besides who doesn’t love a man in uniform? Man, navy dress whites at hot!
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your book, Out of Time?
Out of Time begins with starlet, Grace Carradine donning a disguise in order to enjoy a girls’ night out before filming starts the next day. When a paparazzo begins taking pictures, she escapes onto the restaurant’s patio and runs into Bash as he’s enjoying drinks with his navy buddies. Bash mistakes her for a college student on spring break, and he rushes to protect her from what he thinks is an overzealous admirer. Grace is immediately attracted to Bash’s charm and southern manners, and he’s equally taken by her innocence and beauty. Following a one night stand, the couple is surprised to learn their true identities and that they’ll be spending the next several weeks together while filming in Bash’s hometown. When filming ends they find they can’t walk away for each other, but commitments and pride get in the way, and Grace almost marries the wrong man.
Q: How adorable is it that your hero is an author, and that his book is going to be made into a movie! Every writer’s dream. On whom did you model him? Would you say that you passed some of your characteristics to him? Which characteristics?
Sebastian Baron’s character is a blend of several naval aviators I’ve known over the years. If you’ve ever met one, then you know they’re extremely cocky. As far as appearance goes, I think Bash looks most like the actor Chris Pine. Bash began writing as a way to relieve the tedium of months at sea. I began writing as an escape as well.
Q: What kind of research did you have to do to make your heroine a believable actress?
I watched tons of YouTube videos on movie production as well as read a number of books on how movies are created. As far as acting goes, I interviewed an actress to learn her process.
Q: What’s next for you?
I’m working on an anthology with several of my author friends. I can’t share more at the moment, but it will come out in November of this year, and all the e-book proceeds will benefit an Atlanta charity. I’ve also completed a manuscript called, Someone She Once Knew. I’ll be submitting it to several publishers in the near future. Fingers crossed it finds a home soon.
Good luck! And congratulations once again on your latest release, Out of Time, in the Out of Uniform Series.
